Qanoid's Guide to CBD Glossary

If you are new to CBD or if you are not up to date with all the recent slang and lingo that goes with it, we understand.

Our vocabularies are continuously expanding and having to navigate through CBD terminology without a good guide could be quite difficult.

If you are interested in knowing how CBD could provide benefits for you and how to speak like a CBD expert, we have created an organized glossary that will help you better understand the terminology relating to CBD.

Anandamide

A fatty acid neurotransmitter that helps to regulate several feelings like pain, appetite, pleasure, etc.

Bioavailability

The quantity of a substance that produces an active effect after your body consumes it.

Broad spectrum

CBD oil that was extracted from the hemp plant, and that contains naturally occurring compounds like flavonoids and terpenes.

Cannabidiol

CBD is an abbreviation of Cannabidiol which is the scientific name for CBD.

Cannabinoid

One of the compounds found in the cannabis plant. The most known cannabinoids in cannabis are THC and CBD which are different types of cannabinoids.

Cannabinoid Receptors

An essential part of the endocannabinoid system, they are G-protein coupled receptors found in many different parts of the body.

CB1 Receptor

Most of the CB1 receptors are found in the central nervous system (in the spinal cord and brain). They can also be found in small amounts in the lungs, liver, and kidney. Their main role is to control the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate.

CB2 Receptor

They are mainly found in the immune system, although there are concentrations of CB2 receptors in the spleen and white blood cells. Their main duty is to maintain immune function homeostasis and control inflammation.

Cannabis

Sometimes referred to as Cannabis sativa, it is a genus of plants in the Cannabaceae family.

Capsules

Tablet-like substances containing CBD that are to be ingested through the mouth.

CBD Gummies

An edible form of CBD product that is made to look and taste similar to gummy candies but is infused with CBD.

CBD Isolate

This single CBD molecule is made by processing hemp and removing other plant material, flavonoids, cannabinoids, and terpenes. It is a crystalline powder that is 99.9% pure CBD.

Certificate of Analysis (COA)

A report that offers CBD consumers information like terpene profile, cannabinoid content, etc. They ensure that the CBD product contains exactly what it is meant to.

Decarboxylation

A process in which the cannabinoids are activated by heating the cannabis plant. It allows active cannabinoids to bind to cannabinoid receptors and create the desired effect on your body.

Endocannabinoids

Anandamide (AEA) and 2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2AG), similar in structure to cannabinoids, are naturally occurring compounds produced in the body, responsible for a lot of different functions in our bodies.

Endocannabinoid system

The system in humans and animals that maintains homeostasis throughout the entire body. CBD interacts with this system through its effect on CB1 and other CBD cannabinoid receptors.

Entourage Effect

A theory stating that the full effects of CBD only are felt when the cannabinoid works together with other compunds found in hemp or cannabis.

Extraction

The method of extracting cannabinoids and other compounds from the cannabis plant. The two main types are ethanol extraction and CO2 extraction.

Farm Bill 2018

This legalized the growing of hemp under federal law, in the USA although the hemp plant must contain less than 0.3% THC.

Flavonoids

One of the main compounds in cannabis, there are over 20 kinds of these bioactive compounds. They are responsible for disease prevention, attracting pollinating insects, plant pigmentation, and UV light filtration.

Full Spectrum

Full spectrum CBD oil is made up of all the beneficial compounds in hemp, which includes flavonoids, terpenes, and cannabinoids.

Hemp

 A type of cannabis Sativa L plant species used all over the world to make food, textiles, fiber, etc. There are different varieties of the plant, and they normally contain high concentrations of CBD and low concentrations of THC. They also contain compounds like terpenes, flavonoids, and cannabinoids, and all products made from the hemp plant must contain less than 0.3% THC to be considered legal under EU regulations.

Hemp Extract

Another name for CBD oil produced through plant extraction. This is the best alternative rather than CBD oils made by mixing a carrier oil with CBD isolate.

Hempseed Oil

Not to be confused with CBD oil. Hempseed oil is produced by pressing the seeds of hemp plants. It is not the same as CBD oil or hemp extract however it is often used as a carrier oil for mixing the CBD extracts.

MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) Oil

Oil that contains one or several MCTs, which are saturated fatty acids containing about 6-10 carbon atoms. MCT oil is used mostly in CBD tinctures as a carrier oil to help increase the bioavailability of CBD and help the cannabinoid reach the bloodstream easier.

Nano emulsion

A kind of technology that breaks down CBD into tiny particles known as nanometers, allowing the cannabinoid to be water-soluble and increasing its bioavailability.

Non-Psychoactive

When mentioned in the same context as CBD it generally means that the product does not have the intoxicating effects that are associated with THC.

Phytonutrients

Substances in plants that benefit human health. They are used by plants to stay healthy, and they also help healthy cell communication in humans.

Potency

This is a rating of the CBD oil’s strength. The more CBD is contained in the substance, the higher its potency.

Serving size

This is how much of the cannabinoid is contained in a serving of a CBD product. There are no standard serving sizes currently established, and there are several factors that will determine the CBD serving size you get. The usual serving size for regular consumers is between 40-100mg, with most individuals using this once or twice a day.

Softgel

Another word used to refer to capsules. They are becoming more and more popular among CBD consumers because they are easy to ingest and are perfectly measured.

Terpenes

One of the compounds in cannabis that is said to add to the entourage effect. They are aromatic and they give different CBD strains a unique smell and flavor. They are believed to be quite beneficial, especially to the health and well-being of users.

Third-Party Testing

These are lab tests performed by an independent lab offering an analysis of CBD products. Companies use them to provide a clear outlook on their products, and then offer COAs to provide information about the substance to the consumers. Third-party testing is important for finding the overall quality and safety of CBD oil products.

Tincture

CBD oil in combination with a carrier oil. Tinctures are quite popular because of their versatility.

Topical

A CBD product designed for use on the skin, offering support to the area it is applied on. There are several CBD topicals including cream, balms, lotions, oils, etc.
